The Trio Isimsiz, formed in 2009 at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, won in 2015 the 1st Prize and the Audience Prize at the Trondheim Competition, and in 2017 2nd Prize at the Haydn International Competition in Vienna. They were selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2013 and were awarded a fellowship from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust (BBT) in 2018. The trio has performed widely in Europe, highlights including recitals at the Stavanger, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Peasmarsh and Gower Festivals (broadcast by Radio 3), the Tivoli Concert Hall, Snape Maltings, Fundacion Juan March in Madrid and Marianischer-Saal in Lucerne. Further afield, they have undertaken tours in China and Argentina. The Trio Isimsiz are currently Fellows at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Erdem Misirlioglu was born in 1989 in Suffolk.  He studied piano with Mark Fielding at the Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama and since 2008 with Martin Roscoe and Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.  In 2008, he was a Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musicians Competition, performing Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He recently won 1st Prize in the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe’s Intercollegiate Piano Competition.

Pablo Hernán Benedí was born in 1991 in Madrid. He studied violin at the Antonio Soler Conservatory in San Lorenzo de El Escorial with Polina Kotliarskaya and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with David Takeno and András Keller.  In 2010, Pablo became a member of the Chiaroscuro Quartet. The Quartet’s debut recording was released in 2011 to critical acclaim. As a soloist, Pablo has appeared with orchestras like Philarmonia Orchestra, London Mozart Players and Concerto Budapest.

Edvard Pogossian is a graduate of the Juilliard School studying violoncello with Natasha Brofsky, and of Royal College of Music with Richard Lester. As the winner of the Juilliard Concerto Competition, Edvard performed the Tchaikovsky “Rococo Variations” at David Geffen Hall in New York and at the Harris Theater in Chicago with the Juilliard Orchestra under the direction of Itzhak Perlman. The Chicago Tribune praised Edvard’s performance for his “astonishing musical and technical maturity”, as well as his “winning lightness of touch to everything he played, combined with a velvety tone.” He has performed solo with the Boston Pops in Symphony Hall and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Ex Silentio specializes in Early Music and in Mediterranean traditions being one of the few Greek ensembles in that field. Under the direction of its founder, the recorder player Dimitris Kountouras, it appears regularly in festivals and venues in many European countries such as the Styriarte Festival in Graz, the Banchetto musicale in Vilnius, the Early Music Festival of Riga, the Early Music in St. Ruprecht in Vienna, the Italian festivals Marco Fodella in Milan and Mousike in Bari, the Musica Antiqua da Camera in The Hague, the Via Medieval in Mainz and the Megaron of Athens. Ex silentio collaborated with renowned artists such as the baryton Dimitris Tiliakos, the countertenor Michael Chance, the singer and improviser Savina Yannatou etc. Ex Silentio recorded 5 CDs for Carpe Diem Records Berlin, for Talanton and for Nefeli. The Greek soprano Fanie Antonelou won the first prize of the International Competition “Maria Callas” in Athens, the “Grand Prix Maria Callas” in the category oratorio/lied and has also been awarded the “Frankfurt Mendelssohn-Prize”. She studied voice, opera and lied at the Stuttgart State University of Music as well as Early Music at the Music University of Trossingen (Germany). She recorded with MusicAeterna under the baton of Teodor Currentzis. She has made numerous guest appearances like in the Stuttgart State Opera House, the Athens Concert Hall, the Perm Opera House, among others. Her repertoire ranges from medieval to contemporary music and her voice is marked by individuality of tone and elegance. These qualities have enabled her to collaborate with distinguished conductors, ensembles and festivals. Her first solo-CD “Affinities” has been released by BIS records and contains Greek and German art songs from the beginning of the 20th century.

Angeliki Giannopoulou is a pianist based in Glasgow, studying with Fali Pavri and Sinae Lee in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Born in Athens, Greece, she received her piano diploma from the Athenaeum Conservatory with Nelli Semitekolo, whilst also working with Alexia Mouza. For the 2023 summer season, Angeliki and her piano trio, Chiara, have been selected as a fellowship ensemble to perform, in the Apple Hill Center in America. Also, she is invited to an intensive masterclass with Graeme McNaught and Giuseppe Guarrera in Appenzel, Switzerland, and will also have concert engagements in Greece, after winning an audition from the Kaloy Foundation, chosen by a prestigious jury with Janis Vakarelis as its head. Apart from the piano, she is interested in harpsichord, curation and research on female composers. She will be having her Athen’s Concert Hall debut this winter.

The Moving Band of the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata is… preparing its coach and is getting ready for another journey. Together with dozens of percussion instruments, flutes, pipes, whistles, a bundle of wood and an old piano, the ensemble will travel to the Municipal Railway Park of Kalamata. There, they will present two Buster Keaton movies accompanied by delicious live music! 

Afterwards, Tryfonas Typou on the piano and Arionas Gyftakis on the double bass will interact musically with the film “Le Ballon Rouge” (1956) by Albert Lamorisse.

Tryfonas Typou was born in Thessaloniki in 1997. At the age of 15, with a scholarship from the Greek-German Assembly, he attended for one month jazz and free improvisation classes at the Music University of Detmold (Germany). He is a graduate of JazzArt School, where he studied jazz piano, improvisation, harmony and ensembles with Sylvios Syrros and Spyros Manesis. He holds degrees in music harmony from the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki (class of N. Solomonidis) and in Counterpoint from the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki (class of K. Tsougras). He studied classical piano with Fani Karagianni and Kostas Hardas and received a diploma with best grade from the New Conservatory of Kozani. He has attended masterclasses by Milcho Leviev, Antonis Anisegos, Yiannis Papadopoulos, and others. He has collaborated with Anastasis Gouliaris, Arionas Gyftakis, Gabrielle Milozzi, and Giorgos Tsiropoulos. He is a graduate of the Music Studies Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Arionas Gyftakis was born in Kalamata in 1995. At the age of seven, he started violin lessons at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata. Four years later, he started electric bass lessons with Nikos Tsotras and Harry Charalampous. His great interest for jazz music led him at the age of 14 to start jazz bass with Sylvios Syrros. During these four years he also studied jazz harmony, improvisation and workshop. The same period he also studied classical bass with Takis Kappogiannis. In May 2013, he gave exams at the Berklee College of Music and won the Full Presidential Scholarship. There he studied with John Lockwood, Dave Santoro, Eddie Gomez and Hal Crook. Currently, he is teaching at Jazzart in Athens. His collaborations include musicians such as George Kontrafouris, Spiros Manesis, Takis Paterelis, Andreas Polyzogopoulos, Daniel Rotem, Anastasis Gouliaris, Davis Whitfield, Gabriele Milozzi and others.

Maria Papapetropoulou was born in Athens. She studied piano with Popi and Natalia Michailidou at the “Athenaeum” Conservatory and the Skalkottas Conservatory, respectively. She received her diploma from the Skalkottas Conservatory with honors, earning the first prize. She continued her studies with Francoise Tina at the École Normale de Musique de Paris “Alfred Cortot” and at the Conservatoire National d’Orléans, where she graduated, receiving the first prize. With a scholarship by the Onassis Foundation, she continued her studies at the Karlsruhe University with Ulrich Rademacher, specializing in Lied Accompaniment, and obtained a postgraduate diploma with honors. She has performed on stage in Greece and abroad and has closely collaborated as a soloist with the Athens State Orchestra, the Orchestra of Colours, and the Ryazan Philharmonic in Russia. She has also performed and recorded for the Greek Radio and Television. She teaches piano, accompaniment, and chamber music at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata.

Charlotte Spruit is a passionate chamber musician and soloist, having performed at prominent locations, such as the Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, and the Elbphilharmonie. In 2023, Charlotte was a prize-winner at the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) International Auditions held at Wigmore Hall. In 2022, Charlotte won the first prize as well as the audience prize and the Genuin Classics Prize at the Leipzig International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition. Charlotte has performed chamber works with acclaimed musicians including Janine Jansen, Gidon Kremer, Tabea Zimmermann, Lawrence Power, and Christian Tetzlaff. She is regularly invited to play in chamber music festivals, including the Chamber Music Connects the World festival at the Kronberg Academy and the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival, where she performed with the Doric String Quartet. As a soloist, Charlotte has played with numerous orchestras, including the Residentie Orkest The Hague, The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pauliner Barockensemble, and Ensemble Esperanza.  Charlotte studied at the Guildhall School of Music with David Takeno and at the Royal Academy of Music with Ying Xue. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music with Rachel Podger and Pavlo Beznosiuk.

This work is the New Circle Quartet’s first attempt at the idea of a single composition with different movements. It draws inspiration from contemporary classical composers such as Boulez, Schoenberg and Alban Berg, and follows the path pioneered by Anthony Braxton, Steve lacy, Sam Rivers and others. The work is not aiming to achieve “beauty” or “ugliness”, but is driven out of pure curiosity.

Gabriele Milozzi started playing the saxophone at the age of 11. He graduated from the Conservatory “G. Rossini” of Pesaro (Italy).  In 2011, he got accepted with a scholarship into Berklee College of Music, where he graduated majoring in Performance with a minor in Jazz Theory and Popular Song. He studied with internationally renowned artists, such as George Garzone, Bob Mintzer, Hal Crook, Maurizio Giammarco, Bob Gullotti, John Lockwood, Jason Palmer and many others. Furthermore, he had the opportunity to study and share the stage with prominent jazz artists such as Miguel Zenon, Greg Osby, Eric Harland, Michael Blake, Omer Avital and Jeff Galindo. He performed in jazz festivals of international level and in many important venues both in Italy and the U.S. Gabriele is currently a member of the Arionas Gyftakis Quartet and is pursuing jazz studies in Athens under the guidance of Sylvios Syrros.

George Thomopoulos was born in Athens in 1981. In 2008, he received his degrees in Classical Trumpet from the Municipal Conservatory of Agia Paraskevi, studying with Socrates Anthis, as well as Harmony, Counterpoint, and Band Orchestration with Alexandros Stoupakis. In the same year, he became a member of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Chalandri Municipality, where he continues to work to this day. Throughout his professional career he has participated in numerous concerts and musical theatre productions in collaboration with well-known Greek composers. His passion for jazz deepened when he began taking improvisation and harmony lessons with Sylvios Syrros at the Athenaeum Conservatory. Since then, he has been actively involved in the Greek jazz scene through various collaborations, recordings, and appearances at festivals and live music venues. He is a founding member of the Open Maze Jazz Quintet and a member of the Swing Jazz Band Jeepers Creepers.

THE ENSEMBLE:

German-born violinist Verena Chen began the violin at the age of seven. In 2012, she moved to Paris to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris (CNSM) and finished her master studies at the Hochschule Hanns Eisler Berlin. Winner of several international prizes, such as the special prize of the Jascha Heifetz Competition, her career has earned her performances as soloist, chamber and orchestra musician in prestigious international festivals and halls. Verena has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Hamburger Symphoniker, Ensemble Resonanz, and Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.

Maria Rahmatulla was born in Turkey and began her violin lessons at the age of 5 at the Bilkent University Music School under Muhamedjan Turdiev. Maria has participated in masterclasses with Lucia Ibragimova, Cihat Ashkin, Igor Tkatchouk, Alexander Markov, Felix Froschhammer and Hanna Weinmeister. She has made her solo debut with the Eskishehir State Orchestra in Spring 2018 and in 2020 has won the 2nd Prize at the 28th Gianluca Campochiaro International Competition. Maria graduated from the Bilkent Music Preparatory High School and Adilhoca Aziz’s class in 2022 and is now doing her Bachelor’s in Switzerland at Hochschule der Künste Bern with Prof. Corina Belcea.

Dante Lind, born in Sweden in 2003, began learning the viola at the age of six. He has toured and performed with youth orchestras in Sweden (such as VÄGUS) and in the Northern Europe. Dante received valuable guidance from esteemed artists, including Michael Kugel, Alexander Gordon, Maxim Rysanov and Mikhail Zemtsov, through masterclasses and lessons. Between 2019 and 2022, he attended Musica Mundi School in Belgium, studying with Julia Dinerstein, and performed in notable venues like the European Parliament and with Uta trio at Château du Karreveld. In 2021, he won the 1st prize at the Ingrid & Per Welins Youth Scholarship (ESTA) in Stockholm. Since September 2022, Dante has been pursuing his viola studies at Conservatorium Maastricht in the Netherlands with Julia Dinerstein.

İdil Bursa was born in 2004. She started her cello education at Bilkent University Music and Performing Arts Faculty Primary School with Artur Rahmatulla. She performed her first concert with orchestra at the age of 10 with Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. At the 11th Janigro Cello Competition in 2016, she won the first prize. Then in 2019, she won the 1st prize at the 13th International Jan Vychytil Violoncello Competition in Prag, Czechia. After finishing 2nd grade of Bilkent University Music and Performing Arts High School as a student of Artur Rahmatulla, she continued her high school education with Claire Oppert, Jerome Pernoo and Vladimir Perlin at Musica Mundi School in Belgium and graduated in June 2022. Since October 2022, she studies her Bachelor Degree at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin with Frans Helmerson.

Lidiia Nochovska was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 1988. She started her music education at the age of six. In 2006, she completed her studies in the Lysenko Specialized Music School under L. Vakarina and L. Rayko. Lidiia graduated later from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy (Kyiv) under the direction of O. Ryndenko and from the Instituto Internacional de Música de Camera de Madrid (Spain) in the class of Ralf Gothoni, Eldar Nebolsin, Ángel Quintana, Luis del Valle and Kennedi Moretti. She was a founding member of Trio Areti. Lidiia is currently working as an accompanist at the Department of Opera and Symphony Conducting at the National Music Academy of Ukraine (Kyiv), as well as an orchestra artist and a choir accompanist at the Kyiv National House of Music. Lidiia is also a member of the musical and theatrical team Art Razom.

The trio serves as a platform for creativity, originality and artistic expression of its members both as soloists as well as ensemble musicians. TRIO vis-à-vis has played at the most important festivals and concert series for contemporary music, among others, at the TonArt Festival Esslingen, at the concert series Südseite Nachts and Der Sommer in Stuttgart of Musik der Jahrhunderte in the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, at the Lachenmann PERSPEKTIVEN Festival, at the Suså Festival in Denmark, at the ECLAT Festival. They have been funded by institutions and, as well as the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Science, Research and Art, the LBBW BANK Stiftung, Musikfonds e. Petra Arman graduated in flute with full marks at the age of 18 in her hometown Trento (Italy). In 2018, she graduated with full marks and honors at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano) under the guidance of Andrea Oliva and, in 2021, she graduated with full marks at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart (Germany) under the guidance of Davide Formisano. In 2008, she began collaborating with the harpist Valentina Meinero, in 2009 with the pianist Paolo Orlandi and in 2013 with the cellist Desiree Calzavara. These experiences led her to perform for many audiences in Italy and Iran. She collaborated with Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Orchestra Giovanile Trentina (with which she performed Bach’s “Suite orchestrale n.2” in 2012 and Vivaldi’s “Cardellino” in 2014) and with Orchestra La Verdi (Milan), Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim and RTÉ (Dublin). She has been playing with TRIO vis-à-vis since 2022.

Natasha López was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She graduated in 2011 with a distinction in singing at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar and in 2013 achieved the master of contemporary music with honors in the specialization of singing at the Stuttgart State University of Music and Performing Arts. She has performed in many theatres and opera houses including the Opera Stuttgart, Landestheater Eisenacht, E-Werk-Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar and has also acted in concerts, operas, and contemporary music festivals, such as the Stockhausen Foundation, Festival Mixtur, Lachenmann Perspektiven Festival, Festival Suså, Festival ECLAT, etc. Furthermore, she has been artistic director and soprano of TRIO vis-à-vis since 2012. Since 2016, she has led various interdisciplinary music projects and has received funding from institutions and foundations such as the Goethe Institute, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, the LBBW Bank Foundation, the Musikfonds, the Landeshauptstadt Kulturamt Stuttgart and the Deutscher Komponistenverband, among others.

Hugo Rannou graduated from the conservatory of his hometown, Amiens (France), with Michel Poulet and continued his studies with Veronique Marin in Rueil-Malmaison. In 2009, he began his studies at the Freiburg University of Music with Adriana Contino and Daniel Grosgurin and in 2012 he switched to Conradin Brotbek at the Stuttgart State University of Music and Performing Arts. He completed his studies in 2018 in the class of David Eggert in Bern. He has played with the Stuttgart State Opera, the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn. Furthermore, he has played with the contemporary music ensembles Ensemble Ascolta, Suono Mobile, etc. Hugo Rannou has been a cellist with TRIO vis-à-vis since 2016. Since 2018, he has been a lecturer at the State University for Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart teaching violoncello and pedagogy. Since 2020, he has been solo cellist at the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim.

Joshua Weilerstein enjoys a flourishing guest conducting career across the globe and has forged close relationships with many of the world’s finest orchestras and soloists. He is praised for his expressive and dynamic presence on the podium and for his “intense, eloquently moving and spectacularly knife-edge” performances. His deep love for canonical masterpieces is combined with a passionate commitment to uncovering the works of under-represented composers. Furthermore, he is also a tireless advocate for the music of today. While pursuing his Master’s degree in violin and conducting at the New England Conservatory, Weilerstein won both the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen in 2009 and he was subsequently appointed as Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 2012-2015. In 2021/2022 he became the Music Director of Phoenix, a dynamic and ambitious orchestra in Boston. In 2017, Weilerstein launched the classical music podcast Sticky Notes.

The Kalamata Festival Orchestra, born out of the International Kalamata Music Days, was founded in 2021. It is a chamber orchestra consisting of invited festival musicians, alongside musicians from Kalamata, participants in the masterclasses, and external collaborators. Alexia Mouza is a pianist described as a musician with extraordinary energy, clarity and precision. She has won numerous prizes at prestigious international piano competitions. Alexia enrolled at the International Piano Academy in Imola, Italy, (Profs. Leonid Margarius and Anna Kravtchenko). Postgraduate studies at the School of Music, Boston University, with Boaz Sharon, with scholarships from the Greek State and Boston University, further enrolled at Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv (Prof. Arie Vardi). Considered even from her early years as an explosive talent, she has given performances in Europe, Asia and Americas. She has appeared with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philarmonic Orchestra and Israel Camerata, the Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico, the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano, the State Symphony Orchestras of Athens and Thessaloniki, the State Symphony orchestra Academy of Soloists of Kazakhstan. She has recorded two DVD/CDs, both released by Domovideo and Multigram, Italy.

German violinist Felix Froschhammer captivates audiences with his wide-ranging performance skills. He is first violinist of the casalQuartett and Concert Master of both the Ensemble Symphonique Neuchâtel and Sinfonietta de Lausanne (Switzerland). Felix is also active as a soloist and plays an important role in the Ensemble Chaarts and in Tri i Dve, an ensemble specializing in Balkan music. Previous engagements include appearances at festivals including Beethoven Festival Warsaw, Bruckner Festival Linz, Salzburger Festspiele, Rheingau Musikfestival and Lucerne Festival. His chamber music partners include Gautier Capuçon, Lawrence Power and Fazil Say. Since 2018, he has been the Artistic Director of the Festival du Jura in Switzerland.

Ilias Sdoukos was born in Athens in 1974. He studied violin with Y. Tzoumanis at the Athens Conservatory and viola with Y. Vatikiotis at the Hellenic Conservatory. He graduated in 1997 with best grade and continued with Sven Arne Tepl at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen (Germany), with a scholarship from the Alexandros Onassis Foundation. He graduated in June 2000 with a grade of “1”. He has appeared on stage in many countries and in many cities of Greece. He was a member of symphonic orchestras such as the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of Colours. He is collaborating as a soloist with the Greek Composers Union (since 2000) and the Orchestra of Colours (since 2004). Since January 2001, he holds the principal viola position at the orchestra of the National Opera of Greece.

Indira Rahmatula was born in Uzbekistan in a family of musicians. Her main cello teachers have included her parents, Vagram Saradjian, Ronald Leonard, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Christophe Coin. Her chamber music mentors include outstanding musicians such as Arnold Steinhardt, Ralf Gothoni, Eldar Nebolsin, Tabea Zimmerman and Ferenc Rados. As a soloist Indira has appeared in various countries such as Armenia, Chile, USA, Turkey and Switzerland. At the moment she spends most of her time in Lausanne, playing in the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, of which she is a member since 2015. In addition, she frequently plays as solo cello in Kammerorchester Basel, Balthasar-Neumann Ensemble and performs regularly with Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Indira is a founding member and the Artistic Director of the International Kalamata Music Days. She is also the tutor of the festival’s annual violoncello masterclass.
