Programme Announcement 2019
Dear music friends,
There is less than two weeks left until the 3rd festival “International Kalamata Music Days” begins, and this year’s programme is awaited to be as exciting as it is diverse. The high artistic level, the renowned musicians, the ensembles that are going to appear on stage and our new collaborations, will transform the Messenian capital – alongside its dancing festivities (see the Kalamata International Dance Festival) – undoubtedly into the summer’s music capital of the Peloponnese!
The festival will begin on the 1st July with the “Vocal and Stage Performance Masterclass” with Aris Christofellis and Panagiotis Adam, which will end on the 6th July. On the 3rd July and in context of the Greco-Austrian Music Summer – brought to us by the Austrian Embassy in Athens – the Austrian Wind Orchestra “Danubia” will appear on stage for the second time in Kalamata.
Later, on the 4th of July, the renowned Greek ARTéfacts ensemble (who specialise in contemporary repertoire) will present a musical fairy tale for children, by Stathis Giftakis.
The next day, 5th July, the Wind Orchestra “Danubia” is going to appear once more, but with a different programme including the young and talented cellist Cristina Basili as soloist, at the Dance Megaron’s Main Stage.
On the 6th July, the participants of the “Vocal and Stage Performance Masterclass” are going to present their work during their time at the festival.
A few days later, on the 9th July, our festival will reveal for the first time its cinematic side with a co-production with the New Film Club of Kalamata. The milestone of expressionist cinema, “Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari” (1919), is going to be screened with the accompaniment of original improvisatory music by Arionas Gyftakis & ensemble. The next day sees the beginning of the piano, violin and violoncello masterclasses with Alexia Mouza, Felix Froschhammer and Indira Rahmatulla respectively; these will conclude on the 18th July. Also on the 10th of July, Daniel Dascălu, Radu Barabancea, Jamila Garayusifli, Aleksandar Jordanovski and Dimitrios Lampos are going to appear in the Studio of the Dance Megaron for a chamber music evening with works by Debussy and Dvořák. The next evening (11th of July), the widely renowned duo consisting of Angelos Liakakis (violoncello) and Titos Gouvelis (piano) will introduce us the world of the Russian compositions for violoncello and piano.
On Sunday 14th July, the International Kalamata Music Days, will reveal their experimental tendencies while, this time, entangling the worlds of music and wine during an event with many musicians and many different tastes at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata.
The grand concert of Alexia Mouza, Felix Froschhammer and Indira Rahmatulla, as well with Ilias Sdoukos, will take place on Monday 15th July on the Dance Megaron’s Main Stage. During those days, the participants of the piano, violin and violoncello masterclasses are also going to have many opportunities to appear on different stages of the city. The masterclasses end on the 18th July with a cello recital from the great upcoming cellist Benedict Kloeckner and the widely renowned pianist Danae Dörken at the Ekklesiasterion of Ancient Messene. This concert is supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Athens. After this, our festival will hand things over to the Kalamata International Dance Festival, beginning on the 19th July.
Also, ensure not to miss the musicological seminars and workshops with Katy Romanou, Athanasia Kyriakidou and Riccardo Vaglini, that are going to be held throughout these days at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata.
Last but not least, the exciting musical summer of Kalamata will come to an end in the last days of August with the awaited collaboration and the concerts of the Greco-Austrian string academy “Strings in Motion”, which continues to establish itself as a very important connector between the Greek music scene and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. The lessons will be held at the Conservatory from the 25th until the 31st of August and the two final concerts of the orchestra and of the ensembles will occur on the 29th and 30th August. However, due to the openness of our festival, an extra concert is organised for the 31st August at Costa Navarino.
We can’t wait for this year’s festival to begin!
And don’t forget our side events, including the grand party with the Blues Escape ensemble, in co-production with the International Kalamata Dance Festival, on the 24th July!
Sincerely,
The festival’s founding team
