Philharmonic Amphitheatre of Kalamata
24th until 29th July 2022
This year the International Kalamata Music Days are offering for the first time a masterclass in conducting! Under the guidance of acclaimed conductor Joshua Weilerstein, the masterclass will be held from the 24th until 29th July 2022 at the Philharmonic Amphitheatre of Kalamata. This course provides the chance to young conductors to gain experience in conducting real musicians (piano quintet – pf, vn, vn, va, vc). The masterclass participants will be guided in conducting by Joshua Weilerstein and will also receive feedback by the ensemble musicians. One of the candidates will have the chance to conduct the opening piece (Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune) of the festival concert with the Kalamata Festival Orchestra (chamber orchestra of 13-15 musicians).
The conducting masterclass gives the opportunity to young conductors to develop their skills in conducting and musicianship whilst also assisting them to reach their personal goals. Through a small group of four (4) active participants, the festival is cultivating an inspiring and friendly environment for the best possible development of each musician.
The masterclass with Joshua Weilerstein is aimed at conductors from all around the world and of all ages – from those aiming to study conducting to students and graduates of conservatories and music universities. The masterclasses will be open to the broader public. Students of the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata are invited to attend and get inspired.
The repertoire for the masterclass is:
Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings
Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21
Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67
Claude Debussy, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (L. 86)
Further repertoire might be added throughout the week based on the availability of the material.
Every day, each participant will have a personal session conducting a piano quintet (pf, vn, vn, va, vc) and a group session together with the other participants and Joshua Weilerstein. A detailed schedule will follow after all the applications have been received.
You are welcome to bring your camera and audio recording equipment with you and use it during the classes. If you do not have such equipment, we can provide it.
Lesson languages: English and French
The cost of active participation in the conducting masterclass is 600 € per person (400 € for students of the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata).
An active participation in the masterclass is only possible after application through the website and admission by the conducting tutor.
Application requirements: CV as well as a video of conducting (can be anything: from conducting a pianist to a full orchestra).
