CHIAROSCURO String Quartet

Formed in 2005, Chiaroscuro Quartet comprises violinists Alina Ibragimova (Russia) and Pablo Hernán Benedí (Spain), the Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion from France. Dubbed ‘a trailblazer for the authentic performance of High Classical chamber music’ in Gramophone, this international ensemble performs music of the Classical and Early Romantic periods on gut strings and with historical bows. The quartet’s unique sound – described in The Observer as ‘a shock to the ears of the best kind’ – is highly acclaimed by audiences and critics all over Europe. 

Their growing discography includes recordings of music by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Haydn. Recent releases include Schubert ‘Death and the Maiden’ & String Quartet, D.173 and Haydn Op.76. Future releases include Beethoven Op.18 and Mozart ‘Prussian’ Quartets. 

Chiaroscuro Quartet was a prize-winner of the German Förderpreis Deutschlandfunk/Musikfest Bremen in 2013 and received Germany’s most prestigious CD award, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 2015 for their recording of Mozart’s Quartet in D minor, K. 421 and Mendelssohn’s Second String Quartet in A minor, Op. 13. Among the ensemble’s chamber music partners are renowned artists such as Kristian Bezuidenhout, Trevor Pinnock, Jonathan Cohen, Cedric Tiberghien, Nicolas Baldeyrou, Chen Halevi, Malcolm Bilson, Christian Poltera and Christophe Coin. 

Recent engagements included their enthusiastically received debut concerts at Vienna Konzerthaus and Philharmonie Warsaw, their first US tour and a return visit to Japan. Other highlights have taken the ensemble to Edinburgh International Festival, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, London’s Wigmore Hall, Auditorio Nacional de Música Madrid, Music Festival Grafenegg, The Sage Gateshead, Auditorium du Louvre Paris, Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon, West Cork Festival and Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh for a residency. 

In the 2020/21 season, Chiaroscuro Quartet give concerts in the UK, including Wigmore Hall, King’s Place, a residency at Turner Sims and appear at numerous other venues and festivals including Boulez Saal & Konzerthaus Berlin, Beethovenfest Bonn, Helsinki, Japan, China and North America. Since 2009, Chiaroscuro Quartet have been artist-in-residence in Port-Royal-des-Champs.

Timothy Ridout, viola solo

Timothy Ridout, selected as a BBC New Generation Artist in 2019, is one of the most sought-after violists of his generation. This season he appears as soloist with the Orchestre de Lille, Salzburg Camerata, Philharmonia Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Aachen Symphony, BBC Symphony and Siberian State Symphony Orchestras. Ridout was selected to join the Borletti-Buitoni Trust’s roster of Fellowship winners for 2020. In January 2020 he won Hamburg Symphoniker​’s inaugural Sir Jeffrey Tate Prize.

Other highlights this season include recitals at Wigmore Hall, Auditorium du Louvre and the Lucerne Festival. Ridout takes part in the Lockenhaus, Heimbach and Kronberg Festivals, collaborating with Isabelle Faust, Janine Jansen, Kian Soltani, Benjamin Grosvenor, Lars Vogt, Nicolas Altstaedt and Christian Tetzlaff, among many others. Further afield he returns to Japan and joins the Marlboro Academy in the USA on the invitation of Mitsuko Uchida. 

Over the last year Ridout has made his debut with the Hamburg Symphoniker, undertaken a residency with Baden-Baden Philharmonie, and performed the Walton Concerto with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich under the auspices of the Orpheum Foundation. He has worked with conductors including Christoph Eschenbach, David Zinman, Gabor Takács-Nagy, Sylvain Cambreling, Jamie Phillips and Sir Andras Schiff.

Born in London in 1995, Ridout studied at the Royal Academy of Music graduating with the Queen’s Commendation for Excellence. He completed his Masters at the Kronberg Academy with Nobuko Imai in 2019 and in 2018 took part in Kronberg Academy’s Chamber Music Connects the World.

Joshua Weilerstein is the Artistic Director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, where his contract has been extended through the 2020/21 season. Weilerstein enjoys a flourishing guest conducting career and has established a number of close relationships in both the U.S. and Europe, including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Bergen Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Detroit and Milwaukee, among others. Praised for “intense, eloquently moving and spectacularly knife-edge” performances, Weilerstein is highly sought after and respected for his enthusiasm and profound insight into composers spanning from Gesualdo to Rouse.

Highlights of Weilerstein’s 2020/21 season include a return to the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a live-streamed performance, three live-streamed programmes with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, his debut with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, and return engagements with NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Danish National Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Belgian National and Netherlands Philharmonic orchestras.

Over the past six seasons, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne has thrived under Weilerstein’s leadership and cemented its reputation as one of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras. Weilerstein has greatly expanded the scope of the orchestra’s repertoire, and together they have released successful and critically acclaimed recordings, and toured throughout Europe, joined by soloists such as Juan Diego Florez, Lucas Debargue, and Albrecht Mayer.

Born into a musical family, Joshua Weilerstein’s formative experience with classical music was as a violinist on tour to Panama and Guatemala with the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of Boston, where the orchestra performed for thousands of young people who had never heard a live orchestra concert. This sparked a desire in Weilerstein to pursue a career in classical music. While pursuing his Master’s degree in violin and conducting at the New England Conservatory, Weilerstein won both the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen in 2009. He was subsequently appointed as Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic, where he served from 2012-2015.

Weilerstein is deeply committed to programming both traditional and contemporary repertoire and endeavours to present music from under-represented composers at each concert. He hosts a wildly successful classical music podcast called “Sticky Notes” for music lovers and newcomers alike, which has been downloaded nearly a million times in 154 countries. An advocate for easy communication between the audience and the concert stage, Weilerstein encourages discussion about all aspects of classical music, programming, and the experience of concert-going.

Humanity has been a witness to cosmological phenomena ever since its appearance on earth. Natural Phenomena (Φysics) – mostly beyond human‘s control – and not-explainable Metaphysical Phenomena (Meta-Φysics) compose an endless route and reflect the “wisdom of the universe”. Meta-Φysics consists of programmes, performed each time by different members of the λ-ensemble. They include works inspired by such phenomena as: sunrays, rainfall, snow crystals fall, forest sounds, mammalian voices, ghost stories, souls of dead calling, demon steps, magic and spells, dreams. It is about a crossing through our cosmos translated into sounds, focusing on music of the 20th and 21st century. The programme Meta-Φysics vol. II includes compositions for flute, violoncello and piano.

Natalia Gerakis is considered one of the most accomplished Greek flutists. Both Stuttgart- and Athens-based, she has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player at major halls and festivals in numerous European countries, in Asia, Africa and South America. She has been principal flute of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and performed among others with the Athens State Orchestra, the Athens Camerata, the Wuerttemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn, the Stuttgart State Opera House (Kammertheater). She has also been principal flute of the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (Marseilles/FR) and scholar at the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt (Paxos Festival/GR). In addition to her musical activities as a performer, Natalia Gerakis has shown a remarkable educational activity. Commitment to her art and success in teaching makes her highly regarded and sought-after flutist among international courses (Adams European Flute Center Masterclasses/Holland, German Musicians Association Courses/GER, Camerata Europaea European Academy/GER-GR, National Music Library ”Lilian Voudouri” Masterclasses/GR, MAAKSS Masterclasses Spetses/GR, International Forum for Flute and Piano/Luxembourg, Semaine de la Francophonie Lusaka/Zambia, Universidad Mayor Santiago Masterclasses/Chile). She is flute professor at the Athens Conservatoire and tutor for flute methodology at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart/GER (Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart). In addition, she teaches the flute at the Music Studies Department of the Athens National University. She studied with Geneviève Amar and Vicens Prats at the Nadia & Lili Boulanger Conservatoire in Paris and graduated with the ”1er Prix de la Ville de Paris”. She obtained her master diploma at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, in Germany, under Prof. Jean-Claude Gérard, on a scholarship of the Greek State.

Alexis Karaiskakis-Nastos is one of the most dynamic cellists of a new generation of Greek musicians. He plays with the same enthusiasm the modern as well as the baroque cello, with a repertoire ranging from the early baroque to the contemporary compositions of the 21st century. He is active appearaing both as a chamber musician and a soloist performer in major concert venues in Greece and the rest of Europe (Megaron-Athens Concert Hall, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Pavillon Musical de la Comtesse du Bary in Paris, Palazzo Ducale Vilnius, Onassis Cultural Center, Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center among others). In 2017 he made his USA debut, performing Tchaikovsky’s ”Rococo Variations”. He has performed as a soloist with the B.S.O in Florida, as well as the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra. For his artistic presence Alexis was awarded the ”Best young artist of the year” award in 2011 by the Hellenic Association of Theatre and Performing Arts Critics. In 2018 he was appointed artistic director of the Samos Young Artists Festival, which was awarded as the ”best musical organization in the periphery for the season 2018-2019” by the same association. He teaches cello and chamber music in Athens and has been invited to give masterclasses at the Frost School of Music in Miami. Alexis is a founding member of the Trio El Greco. Combining the performing arts, Alexis collaborates often with choreographers such as Christos Papadopoulos and Pierre Magendie, as well as with the theatrical troupe VASISTAS and Argyro Chioti. He studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt in Paris, where he graduated with distinction and two first prizes (cello and chamber music), and the Hochschule der Künste in Zurich, where he received a bachelor and a master degree. His teachers were Xavier Gagnepain, Raphaël Chrétien and Roel Dieltiens in cello, and Hortense Cartier-Bresson in chamber music. He was an active participant in masterclasses by Anner Bylsma, Philippe Müller and Jérôme Pernoo.

Pianist Lefki Karpodini has given concerts in most European countries, in Canada, Israel, Russia, USA, Barbados, as well as major Festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein, Banff, Cully Classique, Dresden, Brighton, Cheltenham, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Heraklion Piano Festival, Aegean, Symi, Koroni and Paxos Festival. She has performed as a soloist with the Athens Symphony Orchestra, the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, the Pan-European Orchestra. She has collaborated with many musicians and ensembles in Greece and abroad and has been member of the Trioskop and Fibonnaci piano trios while based in Berlin. Since 2013 she performs in piano duo with pianist Michael Brownlee-Walker. She has recorded for the Greek Radio, the BBC and the Deutscher Musikrat (in collaboration with the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt). Awards include Sir Henry Richardson Award, first prize at the Schubert Competition (GSMD) and first prize and gold medal at Filon Music Competition. She has worked closely with composers in Greece and abroad including Dai Fujikura, Anastazios, Dimitris Andrikopoulos, Christina Athinodorou, Jens Joneleit, Stathis Giftakis and has premiered many compositions. She has been chosen twice to perform in the well-known contemporary music Series Park Lane Group at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Her concerts have received excellent reviews in the Greek and international press. Lefki graduated (Piano Diploma with distinction) from the Athens Conservatoire, the Guildhall School of Music and the Drama in London (Bmus, Mmus) and the IEMA in Frankfurt. She is recipient of scholarships from the Greek State Scholarship Institution, the IEMA Academy, the Belgais Centre in Portugal to study with Maria Joao Pires, among others. She is regularly invited to teach at international piano masterclasses in the UK (Pro Corda Piano Course). Lefki holds a teaching position at the Athens Conservatoire.

New compositions for the lyra and piano trio inspired by Greek musical traditions

The combination of the lyra’s primordial sound with the piano trio, the obvious influences from Greek traditional, Byzantine and classical music, as well as the variety of improvisations based on both jazz and modern music, compose the special acoustic character of Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet.

Sokratis Sinopoulos notes: “For me, the quartet is the ideal team with which I can explore new compositional ideas and new forms, while what I appreciate and enjoy the most is that we are able to keep the spark lit in such a way that each of our concerts looks like it’s the first time we’ve met to play music together”. 

The quartet sets off in 2011, initially working with covers of pieces from the musical traditions of the Greek area, and soon focused its work on original compositions by Sokratis Sinopoulos. This material was published in 2015 by Manfred Eicher from ECM records, titled “Eight Winds” (ECM 2407) and received excellent international reviews. It was followed by the second album titled “Metamodal” (ECM 2631) which was published in March 2019.

Their sound is characterized by the constant interplay which, in combination with the high level of their musical and improvisation skills, bring to the music elements of surprise, variety in the creation of musical images and imagination in the narration. The audience is invited to follow an adventure which is constantly developing in front of them, to tune in an endless playing and let themselves undergo a deep, inner experience. 

Among the most important Greek jazz formations, Spiral Trio is counting already 8 years of activity in the Greek music scenery and is one of the few Greek jazz groups with international presence. The three musicians created Spiral Trio out of their need to work as an ensemble and to experiment with modern jazz improvisation. As a result of their experience on national and international stages, they have formed a clearly distinguished and recognizable sound as a group, but also as individuals. 

The three Greek jazz musicians met in 2012. From the very first moment a unique chemistry was born between them, which ever since has been developing through their live performances in jazz clubs and jazz festivals throughout Greece and the rest of Europe. In 2017 they released their debut album “Spiral Trio” by ANKh Music Productions, which is consisting almost entirely of jazz standards, and in 2021 they recorded their second album, consisting almost exclusively of original compositions by the members of the trio. It is going to be released soon.

Jazz pianist Spyros Manesis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1978. His studies include degrees in classical and jazz piano at Athenaeum Conservatory (Athens, Greece, with M. Aivazova, G. Kontrafouris, S. Syrros) and Bachelor and Master’s degrees in jazz piano at the prestigious Conservatory of Amsterdam (K. Boehlee, H. Vroomans, K. Goessens, R. v. Bavel and H. Fraanje) and a Musicology degree from the University of Athens. 

In 2008 he made his first album as a co-leader with project “TRIOISM” (ANKh JAZZ). In 2011 he released “Undelivered” (JACC Records) with almost exclusively original compositions and arrangements for piano trio with Joao Hasselberg (double bass) and Kaspars Kurdeko (drums). He has recorded his own arrangements for solo piano of songs of Lena Platonos’ which was the subject of his master research and was presented with huge success in 2012 at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation. He has been a member of Chronos Project along with Dimitra Galani, Christos Rafalides, Thomas Konstantinou and Petros Klampanis. In 2016 he released “First Takes” (Unit Records), a duo album with original compositions by him and saxophonist Christine Corvisier. In 2017 he released “Spiral Trio” (with Arionas Gyftakis and Anastasis Gouliaris) and in 2018 he released “Well excuse me” with his project TFATFY (Minas Liakos, Stelios Provis and Serafeim Gianakopoulos). 

Among his collaborations are very important names of the Greek and international music scene, such as Dean Bowman, Olivier Gatto, Gilad Hekselman, JD Walter, Marc Abrams, Bodek Janke, Max Pollak, Heather Cornell, Jaques Morelenbaum, Paula Morelenbaum, Joana Espadinha, Pablo Reyes, Christine Corvisier, Dimitra Galani, Savina Yannatou, Christos Rafalides, Dimos Dimitriadis, Petros Klampanis, Andreas Polyzogopoulos, Arionas Gyftakis, Anastasis Gouliaris and many more, and he has performed in many countries including Cyprus, Greece, Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, United States, Colombia and China. He has also collaborated with the Orquestra do Norte (Portugal), the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Municipal Symphony Orchestras of Athens and Thessaloniki. 

In 2015 he was awarded with the First Prize in the 1st Apollon Jazz Competition Greece with his project Spiral Trio (Spyros Manesis, Arionas Gyftakis, Anastasis Gouliaris). 

Spyros Manesis teaches regularly jazz piano at Athenaeum Conservatory, has served as a guest teacher at the Ionian University (2010-11) and has organized and guided a four-day jazz piano workshop commissioned by Greek National Opera (2018). 

Arionas Gyftakis was born in Kalamata, Greece, in 1995. He started playing the classical violin at the age of seven. At the age of 15 his interest in jazz led him to the upright bass. He studied several stylistic concepts of jazz and jazz harmony with Sylvios Syros and he also studied the classical bass with Takis Kapogiannis for two years. In 2012 at the age of seventeen he auditioned for the Berklee College of Music and was able to study with the Presidential Scholarship. At Berklee he had lessons with Hal Crook and Eddie Gomez. He has played with George Kontrafouris, Spyros Manesis, Davis Whitfield, Andreas Polyzogopoulos, Anastasis Gouliaris, Vasilis Podaras, Takis Paterelis, George Tsiropoulos, Daniel Rotem and many more. 

Born in Athens, Greece, Anastasis Gouliaris started his musical education at the age of 15 with the drummer Antonis Garinis and later on with Nikos Sidirokastritis. He continued with educator and sax player Sylvios Syrros at the Athenaeum Conservatory, where he concluded his diploma in drums and jazz improvisation. He took lessons with Billy Hart, Mark Guiliana and Adam Nussbaum. Furthermore, he is a graduate from the Athens University of Economics. 

He started his musical carrier with the jazz-ethnic group Avaton performing in Greece (Athens International Festival 2002, Just Dance Festival 2004, as well as many music halls and jazz clubs) and Europe (Balkan Square Festival in North Macedonia and Serbia 2002, Jazz Progetto Festival in Cremona-Italy 2004, Aquila-Italy 2005). In 2004 he participated at the recording of the bands’ 4th album called “x- Avaton” published by the independent record label LYRA. 

In 2005 he forms with dancers and choreographers Ioannis Mandafounis and Katerina Skiada the Lemurius Dance Company. Together they create and perform three plays of contemporary dance: 

“Shadows projection” (Kalamata International Dance Festival 2005, Balkan Dance Platform 2005, Prague International Dance Festival 2006), “Human Dimensions” (4th Athens International Dance Festival 2006), “Super production” (Kinitiras Performing Center 2010, Athens International Festival 2011). 

In 2012 together with pianist Spyros Manesis and double bass player Arionas Gyftakis they form the Spiral Trio and start performing in Greece and touring in Europe. In 2015 Spiral Trio was awarded with the First Prize at the 1st Apollon Jazz Competition Greece. In 2017 they recorded their first album by ANKh Music Productions. 

He has collaborated with many musicians of the jazz scene and he has performed in various jazz clubs and music halls in Greece and Europe. 

He is an active educator in jazz drumming and improvisation teaching in music schools, private lessons and clinics.
